at The Church of Our Lady & St Nicholas, Pier Head

LIVERPOOL - EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE FOR THE YEAR 2008.

Pier Head

Liverpool

There has been a church on or near this site on the north bank of the River Mersey since about 1254. The parish of Our Lady and St Nicholas was created in 1699. (See the Liverpool Parish Church Web Site for further details)

The original ring of six bells dated 1724 were destroyed when the tower collapsed in 1810 (see Church Web Site for further details). A new tower (the present one) was built, and housed a ring of 12 bells cast by Dobson of Downham Market. The tenor was recast by Warners in 1912.

These bells were removed for safety during the second world war, but were never returned to the tower. The body of the church, but not the tower, was destroyed by enemy action in December 1940. A new ring of 12 was cast by John Taylor and Sons of Loughborough, and the new church and bells were opened in October 1952.

Today, Our Lady and St Nicholas has an active band of ringers. We welcome visitors to our practice and service ringing to ring on what we believe to be the finest ring of 12 bells in The North of England.

Practice is on Friday night at 7.30pm. Sunday Service Ringing is for the Parish Eucharist, with ringing from 8.40am to 9.25am.
